Tutorial: How to Get Your Own Grab Button

Have you noticed that grab buttons are everywhere these days? Grab buttons are images usually intended for use in a blog's sidebar that link to another site or blog. In short- it's an ad. Grab buttons are the ultimate way to show your support and to spread the word about something you dig. Here's an example of my own spiffy grab button which you may, of course, grab (wink wink)...





Now how do YOU get one? Well, I'll tell ya!

1. Choose the image you'd like to use as your button. I'd make it no bigger than 200 pixels wide so it fits on the average sidebar.
2. Upload your cool new button to the image hosting site of your choice. (I use Photobucket, but it doesn't matter.)
3. In another tab, log into your Blogger account and go to the Page Elements page. Click on "Add a Gadget" and select HTML/JavaScript
4. Copy and paste the following code in the text area:



5. In Photobucket (or wherever you chose to store your button), copy the URL or direct link and paste it in both places where the code says YOUR BUTTON LOCATION.
6. Replace the words YOUR BLOG ADDRESS with...your blog address. :)
7. You can change the size of the box below your button by adjusting the numbers 4 (rows) and 22 (columns). You don't have to, but I just thought I'd let you know.
8. Build your blogging empire!

  28. Hi, I found your blog while searching for the 'grab my button' keywords (I also have a tutorial). I noticed your image is 200 wide and some blog sidebars may have a problem. I just published a post on my WP blog to assist with this. Basically tell readers they can use size attributes to shrink to another size. e.g. add this after the end quote for img src
    height="125" width="125" Since yours is square, they can use 150 x 150 or any other square re-sizing! I actually put the 125 size on my blogspot blog and it looks fine!
    P.S. I love that you give free blog design makeovers or touchups ...

    I love your blog, and it's helped me so much!! I'm wanting to make a button, but I'm having a terrible time figuring it out, even with this tutorial. I don't know how to use photobucket, and can't seem to get the photo to work. I just finally gave up and placed it as a large graphic at the bottom of my blog. I'd love it if you would be able to help me, keeping in mind that I'm really not very tech savy and could use any and all guidance you would be willing to offer!

Anyhow, I made it at last, on how to make a button, I've been trying this one for weeks, googling it, going to tutorial website but couldn't figure it out. Thank you again for the help and for sure I will look at more of your helpful tutorials.
    I have one suggestion, how to make or put a scroll bar in one of our widgets. As you see we accumulated friends and their websites so I wanted to put a scroll bar to make it short so not to make our blog very long to look at. ^_^ Thanks again it's just a suggestion will be surely coming here forever!!! ^_^

  113. Honestly, it took a few hours for me to get this done! First Picasa didn't work out so went to Flickr and it refused to see my creation as a jpg so I now have a Photobucket account too! THEN it finally showed up WAAAAAY too large but thanks to SBA's comment about sizing it, it worked!

    Thanks for the tutorial. I'm another blogger who really wanted her own. Hopefully it links. Or if anyone really wants it, it can be cut & pasted.

  131. I have learned so much from your tutorial but I have a problem. I manipulated an image in Photobucket editing and put my blog name on the pic. I copied your code then placed the DIRECT code of my new image where you instructed to put it and my blog address etc.
    I get the little box at the bottom on my blog but a red X where my image should be. I have removed it because I don't want it sitting there with no pic.
    Please tell me what I did wrong or did Photobucket do something to the code that interferred with yours. In PB I also made the image width 200 as you instructed so can't be that either.
    Boohoo and I so want a button of my own.

  147. It's not working for me! :( When I am doing it, I look at my blog, and the button comes up as a little box with a piece of paper that's folded on one edge and has two little blue dots and a pink simi circle mouth. Help!

  155. Oh my goodness... I spent FOREVER trying to get this done after googling "create blog button". After a lot of frustration, I googled "create a blog grab button" & came to good ole Shabby Blogs (where I got all the bedazzling for my blog) & did it in 5 minutes. Shabby Blogs... I LOVE YOU!

  162. No matter I times I try this, and with different photo sites, my picture shows up HUGE on my page above the address box. I've resized on my computer AND then confirmed again an Photobucket. Everything else is fine, but I can't get the size of the photo to stay put! haha Help! Thanks!

One question I have is, How do you make a button for blog #2 and then want to post it on blog #1? For some reason when I try to click on my button on blog #1 my browser won't recognize my request. Help?

  180. I think that you have a great site and I love your designs that I've seen on other blogs. :)

    One thing that I would like to see is a tutorial on how to create a blog template from scratch, not based on someone else's basic template. Barring that, I would just be happy to find someone that would/could tell me how I need to save my images (format/size) for use as blog backgrounds/headers, etc. Every image that I've created and tried to use as a background on Blogger has visited wonky-ville instead of displaying nicely. :(

  193. Mrs. Crafty Pants. I know one way of doing it. If you use blogspot then you have the option of ading an url, for exampel the adress of your facebook account. This will make you image clickable. If you have to write your own code it should look something like this:

    img src="http://YOURBUTTON.jpg" href="http://YOURFACEBOOKACCOUNT.com" target="_blank"></img

    I can't promise it will work but I do know that if you goggle your question you should find a code or tutorial you can use. :D

  194. Hmmm.... The code didn't turn up as I wrote it. But you can find it in the example above. Just change it so that it directs to your Facebook account. I hope it helps some and doesn't confuses things... lol /Cheers!
